GENERAL PHOTOGRAPHY GROUP

Photography is a promiscuous medium that touches everyone’s lives through multiple platforms and distribution channels. What is the importance of photography in a contemporary world where flows of images dominate our attention spans? What are the stakes of photography in contemporary society, when everybody with a phone has a camera in the pocket? There is not enough language to help us understand the current state of image culture as a digital production and reproduction of self in scrolling culture.

What language and devices do we have at our disposal to start to consider the relation between analog and digital photography? What does it mean to be visually literate in this world? The technology of photography is deeply embedded in our social history. Technology, the social, and the body are terminally intertwined through photography. How do we deal with the current distinct lack of a critical relation to the medium? How are the photographic tools oppressive or democratic in terms of film stock, optics, economics, access, representation, and positionality? Photography is more than a digital bitstream.

General Photography Group is an evolving gathering for visual literacy of photography as an expansive form.
